When you hear of the Czech Republic, the first thing that comes to your
mind is definitely Prague. Of course, the capital Prague is an amazing city
with splendid historic centre, very popular by tourists. Beautiful monuments
like the Prague Castle or the Charles Bridge, narrow streets and romantic
places by the river Vltava (Moldau)... no wonder Prague is among the most photographed
places in Europe.
The second thing what could you recall when hearing about the Czech Republic
is beer. There are some excellent Czech breweries whose beers you can taste all
around the world. We don’t argue, Czech beer is great... However, there is one more thing everybody should know about when
thinking of the Czech Republic and what Czech people can be really proud of –
wine.
As you might have found out from the name of our blog, it is dedicated to
wine. Although almost nobody knows that wine is produced in our little country,
it is definitely worth to know it and what is more important – to taste it. We
are three young enthusiasts who strive for ensuring Czech wine well-deserved
worldwide popularity. We would like to present this hidden treasure of our
country abroad and bring it to our customers.
Winemaking has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. From the 3rd
century, the Romans have planted vineyards in the biggest wine region called
Moravia – located in the south-eastern part of the country. Two thirds of the
production are white varieties which ripen into refreshing, fruity wines with
pleasant acidity. Czech wine is quite rare and special - the total area of
vineyards is only 17.000 ha (compared to 120.000 ha in Bordeaux). The climate
is „cool“ - mild, continental, and due
to the pattern of warm days and cold nights, the ripening is slowed down which
enables a high concentration of aromatic substances.
The high quality of Czech wine is constantly proven by prestigious
international awards gained among the most famous rivals from France, Italy or
USA. Czech wines have been awarded at top competitions, including Vinalies
Internationales in Paris, Sélections Mondiales des Vines in Quebeck, San
Francisco International Wine Competition, AWC Vienna, etc. All in all, Czech
wines won 500 international medals in 2015, pretty impressive, isn’t it?
